Alice, 87 of Lucerne, IN passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 1:23am at her residence.

Alice was born September 8, 1936 at the family farm in Grabill, IN. She was the seventh child born to Daisy and Doy Haifley Gorrell. After graduating from Harlan High School in 1954 Alice enrolled in nurses training at Parkview Hospital. She became an RN in 1957. In one of her nursing rotations at a hospital in Logansport, IN she went on a blind date and met the love of her life and future husband, Gilbert. Alice married Gib or February 1, 1958 in Harlan, IN.

Mrs. Rothermel began her nursing career at Logansport Memorial Hospital shortly after her honeymoon. She was a surgery nurse, night supervisor, evening supervisor, clinical coordinator and Associate Director of Nursing. In her over 50 years at the hospital, she was very proud of helping to set up the Cass County Ambulance Service which started on July 4, 1976. She retired as the hospital’s patient advocate in 2005. She occasionally worked as a supervisor until she fully retired in 2011.

Alice was an active member of the Indiana Mothers of Twins Club of Indiana and was Indiana Mother of the Year twice. She was an active member of Metea Baptist Church. She loved her family, friends, God and all of nature. She loved Christmas, reading, listening to music and travel.

She is survived her children, Carolyn Rothermel (David McCallister) Fort Wayne, IN; Judy Davis, Asheville, NC; Mark Rothermel (Tracy) Muncie, IN; Melissa Rothermel (Brian Alletto) Wheaton, IL; and Nada O’Neal (honorary sibling).

Grandchildren Nathalie Bennett (Joseph) North Charleston, SC; Kate Kelly (Dan) Nichols, SC; Samantha Raymer, Muncie IN; Johnathen Rothermel, Muncie, IN. Great-grandchildren Elizabeth & Benjamin Bennett North Charleston, SC;

Brother Glen (Ione) Gorrell, Sister-in-law Betty Gorrell many nieces and nephews; granddogs and grandcats.

Six siblings, Irma Poisel, Harry Gorrell, Mabel Shoup, Elsie Wappes, Lela Diltz and Stanley Gorrell preceded her in death.

The service will be 11am Monday, September 9, 2024 at Metea Baptist Church. Burial will be in Metea Cemetery, Metea, IN.

Visitation from 1 to 5pm Sunday, September 8 at Gundrum Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Cass County (Indiana) Humane Society and Logansport Memorial Hospital Foundation.
