Bernard Jay Bickell, 85, of 25 War Admiral Way, Greenville, died Saturday, March 29th in St. Francis Hospital, Greenville, SC.

He was born November 5, 1922 in Davenport, IA to Homer T. and Florence M. Bickell. As a youth he resided in Niles, MI and Walton and Logansport, IN. He graduated from Logansport H.S. in 1942 and was a member of the football team. Bernard (also known as BJ or Bernie) served as a cartographer in Europe in WWII in Belgium, France and Germany. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Rynearson on May 29, 1943. He worked at Medland & Bowman Architects in Logansport until 1965 when he moved to Muncie, IN and worked for Ball Corporation. Bernie was construction supervisor for the Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie. He moved to Travelers Rest upon retirement from Ball in 1989. BJ was a member and deacon of the Ninth St. Christian Church in Logansport and attended Hazelwood Christian Church in Muncie. During retirement he liked to travel, do gardening, woodworking and make stained glass articles.

Surviving are his wife Mary of Travelers Rest; a son Kent (wife Janice) of Westminster, CO; grandchildren, Hannah Bickell of Murfreesboro, TN, Sarah Fladeland (husband R.J.) of Indianapolis, IN, Noah Bickell of Indianapolis, IN and 1st Lieutenant David Bickell (wife Judith) of Clarksville, TN. David is currently serving our country in Afghanistan.

Funeral services will be held at 10 am Friday morning April 4th at Gundrum Funeral Home in Logansport, IN with burial immediately following the service at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Logansport. Pastor W. Frank Hibbard will be officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 Thursday evening April 3rd at Gundrum Funeral Home.
