Charles E. Becker âCharlieâ 78, of Metea, went home to be with the Lord on December 5, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on March 26, 1933 in South Bend, Indiana to the late Sylvester & Illie Becker (Neff). He was married on December 31, 1980 to Marilyn Yantis-Cox who survives.
He was a graduate of Metea High School. Charlie was a United States Army Veteran who served in the Korean Conflict. He was a lifelong farmer and skilled carpenter. Charlie was a devoted member of Gideons International and Metea Baptist Church. He enjoyed going on missionary trips with the churchâs youth program. Charlie served as a crew leader with World Changerâs using his carpentry skills to assist people that were less fortunate. His missionary work took him throughout the world including Haiti, Guyana, Nicaragua, South Korea, Mexico and various places within the United States. In his earlier years, he enjoyed coaching softball and later in retirement he enjoyed woodworking in his workshop.
Charlie was known for his modest disposition and firm handshake along with his words of wisdom such as âLearn as much as you can about everything you can because you never know when you may need itâ along with âAll you take with you when you die is your soul, material things donât matter.â During his life he witnessed to many people.
He is preceded in death by his father Sylvester and mother Illie. Survived by his wife Marilyn and three daughters; Diane (Jack) Zimpleman, Donna (Tim) Corn, Darla Becker and step-daughter Sue (Frank) Hodge. Grandchildren; Angie (Paul) Deming, Ryan (Lisa) Zimpleman, Christy Corn, Greg (Camile) Zimpleman, Evan (Nicole) Corn, Laura (Jake) Woolever, Kyle (Eliza) Corn, Nancy Gunter, Sara (Ben) Vangan & Aaron Gunter. Step-Grandchilden; Don (Theresa) Hurst and April Hodge. Also surviving are twenty-six Great-Grandchildren and one Great-Great-Granddaughter.
Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. â 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 9, at Gundrum Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 10, at Gundrum Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in Metea Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would like gifts to be made to Gideons International or Metea Baptist Church.
