Services for Duane B. Howard, 88, Logansport, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Gundrum Funeral Home.

He died at 5:05 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2008, in Logansport Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 30, 1919, in Miami County, he was the son of Verlie B. and Edna R. Umbarger Howard. He was married Oct. 20, 1940, in Logansport, to Annalee Raymer, who preceded in death Jan. 5, 2004.

He retired as a master sergeant after 30 years with the Indiana National Guard.

He was a member of Cross-Wind United Methodist Church, Lions Club, Eagles Lodge 323, Tipton Masonic Lodge 66, American Legion Post 60, VFW Post 3790, Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne, Boy Scouts of America and Cass County Council on Aging.

Duane was a 1937 graduate of Galveston High School, former board member of the Cass County Red Cross and member of the U.S. Navy Armed Guard Organization. Duane was drafted into the U.S. Navy in September 1944, leaving behind his wife and two young sons. As part of his service, he circumnavigated the globe on the Liberty Ship SS O.B. Martin. Following the war, he was among the founding members of the Logansport National Guard Unit.

Surviving are sons, Duane L. Howard and wife, Joyce, Grand Junction, Colo., Dr. Larry E. Howard and wife, Cindi, Salem, Mo., and Donald E. Howard and wife, Sandy, Orangevale, Calif.; daughter, Beverly Hall and husband, Dan, Indianapolis; sister, Rosaline Ulrey and husband, Wallace, North Manchester; grandchildren, Angela Wildrick, Victoria Anderson and Jason Plummer, all of Logansport, and 17 other grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Hobert E. Howard.

Duane was especially devoted to and cared for his Logansport residing grandchildren, Angie, Tori and Jason.

The Rev. Gary Lewis will officiate. Burial, with full military graveside rites, will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cross-Wind United Methodist Church, Logansport Lions Club and Logansport Memorial Hospital Foundation.
