Eugene W. Smith, 87, Logansport, died at 3:41 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at Logansport Memorial Hospital.
Born March 27, 1924, in Cass County, he was the son of Fred H. and Grace M. Ward Smith. He was married Aug. 29, 1948, in Cass County, to Donna Lou Snider.
Eugene retired as the manager of the Indiana Employment Security Division.
He was a 1942 graduate of Young America High School and a 1949 graduate of Indiana University School of Business. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Twilighters. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II serving in the South Pacific Theater. He was the past master of the Young America Masonic Lodge 534, and former member of the Elks Lodge 66. Mr.
Smith was also the recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Award.
He was an avid IU sports fan, and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Donna Lou Smith, Logansport; daughter, Debra Whitman and husband, Bob, Indianapolis; son, Brent Smith and wife, Linda, Coxsackie, N.Y.; granddaughter, Emily Whitman, New York, N.Y.; grandson, Thomas Whitman, Cincinnati; stepgrandson, Jonathon Eames and wife, Amber, Greenville, S.C.; sister, Kathleen S. Beck, Walton; brother, Stan F. Smith and wife, Nancy, Walton; stepgreat-grandchildren, Jacob, Seth and Lily Eames, Greenville, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother-in-law, Bill Beck.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Gundrum Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Dean Fager officiating. Burial, with full military graveside rites, will be in Center Cemetery, Young America.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Logansport.
