Fred William Martin 97, of Fort Myers, Florida and formerly of Logansport, passed away Sunday in his Ft. Myers residence. Born November 10th, 1920 in Washington Township, Carroll County, Indiana to the late Charles F. and Lula (Downham) Martin. Fred was the third of four children. On May 21, 1944 in Cass County, IN, he married Martha Irene Rush who preceded him in death on January 8, 1998.
Fred was a 1939 graduate of Deer Creek High School where he developed a love for basketball. After high school, he farmed with his dad until WW2 broke out and Fred was called to duty in the U.S. Navy. He served for three and a half years in the Pacific on a troop carrier. After the war, Fred and Martha settled into life in Carroll County, raising their family of five children and he began his own farming career. In addition to farming, Fred’s public service included terms as a Carroll County Councilman and terms as Carroll County Consolidated School Board Member. Fred was an avid golfer during his retirement years. He loved his family and his infectious smile touched everyone that he met. Fred never met a stranger
Survivors include two daughters, Vicky Coppock, Fort Myers, FL; Marcia (Mark) Maple, Kokomo, IN; two sons, Craig(Jeannie)Martin, Fort Myers, FL; Mark (Karen)Martin, Logansport, IN; one sister, Helen Forgey, Camden, IN; thirteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.
One son, Kenny, two brothers, Floyd and Carl, preceded him in death.
A celebration of life will be held at 6:00pm Saturday June 30, 2018 in the Deer Creek Presbyterian Church, Deer Creek, IN with Pastor Harry Roselle officiating. A gathering of friends and family will be held Saturday at the church from 3pm until time of services. A private family burial was held in Deer Creek Hopewell Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, in memory of Fred, can be given to the Deer Creek Presbyterian Church, 4450 IN-29, Camden, IN 46917
