Gilbert E. Rothermel, 80, of Lucerne, Ind., passed away Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 7:30 a.m. at his residence.
Gilbert was born October 23, 1931 in Logansport, Ind. to Charles and Mabel Werstler Rothermel. Gilbert married Alice L. Gorrell on February 1, 1958 in Harlan, Ind. He is a retired mail carrier from the Logansport Post Office after 34 years of service.
Mr. Rothermel was a United States Navy Veteran serving on the USS Mispillion and USS Thomas Jefferson during the Korean Conflict. A 1951 graduate of Logansport High School, he is a member of American Legion Post #3790, National Association of Letter Carriers and attended Metea Baptist Church. He loved his family, God, the Ocean and all of nature. Gib was proud of the fact that he had been married for 53 years.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Rothermel of Lucerne, Ind.; daughters, Carolyn Rothermel and husband, David McCallister, of Fort Wayne, Ind., Judy Davis and husband, Duane, of Asheville, N.C., Melissa Rothermel and husband, Brian Alletto, of Wheaton, Ill.; son, Mark Rothermel of Muncie, Ind.; granddaughters, Nathalie Bennett and husband, Joseph, of Charleston, S.C., Kate Davis of Asheville, N.C.; sisters, Alberta Hitchens of Logansport, Ind., Evelyn Berkshire and husband, Robert, of Logansport, Ind.; several nieces and nephews; and 1 great-grandchild expected in April.
4 sisters, Zelma Demerly, Mildred Murphy, Betty Goltz, and Edna Mae Snyder preceded in death.
The service will be 11 a.m. Monday, November 21, 2011 at Metea Baptist Church. Chaplain Charles Azbell officiating. Burial, with full military rites, will be in Metea Cemetery, Metea, Ind.
Visitation from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Gundrum Funeral Home.
