Gladys E. Helms, 82, of Logansport, passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 in her residence, surrounded by her family that loved her dearly.
Born on October 10, 1932 in Walton, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Edith Ann (Culp) Kidd. On February 18, 1950 in Mexico, Indiana she married Hollis F. Helms who survives. They were proud that they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in February.
Gladys was a homemaker and attended Twelve Mile and Logansport High School. She was a loving wife, mother, and nana. Gladys loved being a farmers wife, and all of the trips hauling corn to the elevators, driving tractors, and working in the farrowing house. Later in life she began taking golf lessons and was proud to have made a hole-in-one at the local Par 3 golf course. She enjoyed spending 23 winters in their home in Bonita Springs, Florida. She was a member of the Miami Baptist Church, a proud volunteer of the former Red Cross at Memorial Hospital, and often referred to as the best cook in Cass County. She was elected to the Clay Township advisory board where she did the assessing in Clay Township. Gladys loved to fish on Sand Lake in Minnesota, especially at "Helms Point" appropriately named after Gladys's historic day of landing 9 walleye as her husband Hollis steered the boat.
Surviving along with her husband Hollis is one daughter, Teresa Ann Helms, Logansport, IN; one son, Dale (Mary) Helms, Lafayette, IN; one sister, Gertie Hughes, Parsons, TN; two granddaughters, Cassie (John) Gasser, Delphi, IN; Kari (Alan) Gerth, Fishers, IN; and three grandsons, Christopher Helms, Kokomo, IN; Dr. Ryan (Megan) Helms, West Lafayette, IN; Matt Helms, Peoria, IL; eight great grandchildren, Hudson Helms; Bailey, Jordyn, and Cayden Gasser; Emma and Hayden Helms; Zach and Tyler Gerth.
One son, Dana Helms preceded in death.
A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, January 5, 2015 at 10:00AM in the Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Marcellino and Chaplain Larry Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Logansport, IN.
Visitation will be from 1:00PM till 4:00PM on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at Gundrum Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Guardian Angel Hospice.
