Gregory Scott Fivecoate
August 15, 1966 – October 13, 2018
A much-loved son, brother, husband and uncle, Gregory Scott Fivecoate, 52, of Fort Worth, Texas, passed away peacefully at the Kindred Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas October 13, 2018 with family and friends present. He had bravely confronted and fought cancer. He was born August 15, 1966 in Peru, Indiana and resided in Fort Worth, Texas the last 10 years. He graduated high school from Indiana Academy in Cicero, Indiana in 1984 and attended secondary school at Southern College in Collegedale, Tennessee.
He is survived by his mother, Verna “Maxine” (Chaffins) Fivecoate of Logansport, Indiana; brother Darrell P. (Kelli) Fivecoate of Cicero, Indiana; sister Erin D. Brugh (Theodore Schmicker) of Logansport, Indiana; brother Randell D. (Caron) Fivecoate of Rockfield, Indiana; Nieces - Brandi Flores, Brenna Fivecoate, Marisa Brugh, Chloe Fivecoate and Alisha Fulmer; nephew - Russell Fivecoate; 6 Great Nieces & Nephews, and former spouse Jodi Keeler Fivecoate of San Diego, California. He was preceded by his father, Kenneth Dean Fivecoate.
Greg grew up in rural Indiana with a passion for adventure and a love for his country. As a young man he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on March 7, 1989 and attended basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. On August 4, 1990 and shortly after enlisting in the service he married the love of his life Jodi Keeler Fivecoate. With reinforcement on the home front, Greg continued his rigorous military training in Naval Air Crew Candidate School and Marine Aerial Navigation School, Greg became an Aerial Navigator and flew KC-130s supporting real-world contingencies around the globe. He was a gifted Marine warfighter and a graduate of Advanced Airlift Tactics Training Course, Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course and Staff Non-Commissioned Officer Academy.
Greg’s military duty stations included MCAS Cherry Point – NC, MCAS El Toro – CA, NAS Glenview – IL, Carswell AFB – TX, NAS Pensacola – FL, MCAS Miramar – CA and MCAS Futenma, Okinawa – Japan. He was a proud aircrew member of the Naval Flight Demonstration Team as the Blue Angels – “Fat Albert” Navigator and supported numerous missions and deployments including Operation Desert Shield/ Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. During his career, he earned the rank of Gunnery Sergeant of Marines where he attained qualifications and designations such as Combat Qualified, Celestial Qualified, Night Systems Instructor, NATOPS Instructor and Weapons and Tactics Instructor.
Gunnery Sergeant Fivecoate’s accommodations include the Air Medal with 8 Strike/Flight awards, (4) Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medals, (6) Marine Corps Good Conduct medals, (2) National Defense medals, Combat Aircrew Wings with 3 Stars and Aerial Navigation Wings. After 20 faithful years of military service, Greg retired from active duty on March 31, 2009 and continued to serve his country by joining the US Postal Service in Fort Worth, Texas until the day of his death.
He was a collector of lighters, shot glasses and matches; passionate about football and enjoyed outdoor watersports. Whether it was canoeing or cooking, he was fun and full of life. Greg Fivecoate was an elite aviator and fierce warfighter; he was a man with drive and purpose; full of sarcasm and wit. With all of his talents he was never boastful and never complained. His stubbornness was resilient to the end as he faced the greatest adversity in his life. His contagious laugh will never be forgotten. For anyone that knew him, called him “5”…but those who knew him best, called him friend. Gunny “5” has answered the call to service for the last time; guarding the gates in Heaven. Rest in Peace Marine…Semper Fidelis.
A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday October 20, 2018 in the Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastor Blake Hall officiating. Burial with full military rites will be held immediately following the services at Ever-Rest Memorial Park Cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 4 - 7 pm Friday Oct. 19, 2018 in the Gundrum Funeral Home.
