Homer D. Shafer Jr., age 78, of Logansport, died at approximately 11:27 am Friday, January 6, 2012 at St. Joseph Hospital in Kokomo.
Born March 25, 1933 in Carroll County, IN, he was the son of Homer Dale and Katherine E.(Shaffer) Shafer .
Homer was a former Police Officer for the City of Logansport for over 21 years and held the rank of Captain when he retired. He also worked for the Logansport State Hospital before he retired for a second time in 1995.
Homer was a member of the American Legion Post #60, Life Member of V.F.W. Post #3790 and a member of the Logansport F.O.P. Lodge #71.
Homer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Korean War and also served in the U.S. Army and the Indiana National Guard.
Survivors include, 5 sons - Stephen (Lorraine) Shafer of Logansport, IN, Timothy (Debra) Shafer of Noblesville, IN, Thomas Shafer of Logansport, IN, Patrick (Kimberly) Shafer of Monticello, IN, Scott (Stephanie) Shafer of Logansport, IN; daughter â Melissa (Mark) Ambre of Noblesville, IN; 2 brothers - Bob (Janet) Shafer of Lockport, IN, Doug (Ann) Shafer of Logansport, IN; 4-sisters - Clarabelle (Don) Potts of Burnettsville, IN, Evelyn (George) Vianco, of Logansport, IN, Shirley Long of Monticello, IN, Kay (Steve)Wright of Zionsville, IN; 14-Grandchildren ,Stephen D. Shafer Jr., Ross Shafer, Ren Shafer, and Jesse Shafer of Logansport; Kevin Shafer and Taylor Shafer of Indianapolis; Jeffrey Shafer of Calabasas, CA; Leslie Thompson, Cicero; Jessica Shafer, US Coast Guard stationed in San Francisco; Ashley Ponto, Lafayette, Amanda Ortman and Aaron Henson, Indianapolis; Zachary Shafer, US Air Force stationed at Shaw AFB in South Carolina, and Grace Shafer, Noblesville and 9-Great Grandchildren, Dylan and Mason Shafer, Logansport; Norah, Polly, and Ingrid Thompson, Cicero; Maya and Maddox Shafer, Calabasas, CA; Noah Shafer, South Carolina; and Ethan Shafer of Indianapolis.
Homer was preceded in death by a grandson, Luke Shafer, and a great granddaughter, Kali Ponto.
Services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at Gundrum Funeral Home. Officiating the services will be Father Mike McKinney.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 09, 2012 from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Gundrum Funeral Home.
Burial, with full military rites, will be in the St. Johns Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Emmaus Mission Center.
