Lois C. Layman, 86 of Logansport, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2016 in her residence.
Born on February 13, 1930 in Logansport, she was the daughter to the late Lorian David and Mary Sophia (Fansler) Chambers. On May 14, 1949 in Logansport she married Ralph E. Layman who preceded in death on January 10, 1989.
Lois worked as a real estate agent for Schwering Realty, and retired from Modine Manufacturing at the age of 80. She had also previously worked at Switches and the H.W. Gossard Company.
Lois was a member of the Amaranth, Rebekah’s, Pythian Sisters, White Shrine, Royal Center Chapter #58 Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of America Council # 39, Nomads of Abrudaka- Kashana and Ladies of the Orient. She was a Graduate of Washington TWP High School and attended IUK when she was age 70. Lois was Past Senior Regent of chapter #507 Women of the Moose with Academy of Friendship with college of Regents Star Recorders Degrees. Past Royal Matron of Logansport court #4 Order of the Amaranth. Past Worthy High Priestess of Naomi Shrine #9 White Shrine of Jerusalem. Past president of Indiana State Association of White Shrine 1993. Past Noble Grand of Purity Rebekah Lodge #127. Past District Deputy President of District #24. Past Chief of Diana Temple #30 Pythian Sisters. Past Grand Chief of State of Indiana 1995. Past president of Logansport Business and Professional club 1991. Secretary of Modine UAW local 1954. Past president of the Kila club. Member of the Ladies Encampment Auxiliary Patriarch Militant. She also performed as a clown. Lois was an avid collector of clowns and penguins. She enjoyed basket weaving, cake decorating, candy making, ceramics, and gardening, especially Roses and Irises.
Surviving are three daughters, Karol (Jeff) Gunter, Peru; Kimberly (John) Greenwood, Madison, TN; Kelly (Mario) Gutierrez, Chicago Heights, IL; two sons, John David (Margo) Layman, San Antonio, TX; Samuel Scott (Shelli) Layman, Indianapolis; fourteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandson.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Deloris Osborn; one grandson, Scott Cox; and one great granddaughter, Julianna Layman.
A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 24, 2016 in the Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastor James Lund officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Logansport.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 PM on Monday, May 23, 2016 also in the funeral home.
A Knights of Pythian Sisters Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 PM followed immediately by the Rebekah’s Memorial Service.
Memorials may be made to the Cass County Humane Society or the American Diabetes Association.
