Mary Breckenridge

Mary Ellen Breckenridge, 85, Lucerne, died at 5:36 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at WoodBridge Health Campus.

Born Aug. 15, 1925, in Logansport, she was the daughter of Roscoe L. and Erna Wendt Hinkle. In May of 1986, she married Fred Breckenridge, who survives.

She worked as a legal secretary to attorney Lynn O’Neill for several years. After moving to Lafayette in 1970, she worked as a school secretary in West Lafayette School Corporation. She retired in 1986 to enjoy her golden years with her loving husband, Fred Breckenridge.

She enjoyed Civic Theatre, where she had played Molly Brown, in “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” and Adelaide, in “Guys and Dolls,” to mention a few parts. She loved doing crafts, quilting and sewing and always had a project going in her dining room. Her dream was to play the piano, and she made a good stab at it! She amazed all of us with her crossword puzzle skills.

She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church.

She was a wonderful mother and grandmother to her five children and their spouses, 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family would especially like to thank The Neal Home, WoodBridge Health Campus and Southern Care Hospice for all their help and kindness.

Surviving are husband, Fred Breckenridge, Lucerne; daughter, Judith Ann Moss and husband Michael, Crawfordville, Fla., and Mary Ann Wells and husband, Michael, Indianapolis; sons, Stephen Lee Baker and wife, Leticia, Fayetteville, N.C., Rob Baker and wife, Ruth, and John Baker and wife, Carolyn, all of Logansport; sister, Lois Parish, Logansport; sister-in-law, Marlene Hinkle, Marion; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Hinkle; one granddaughter, Staci Chubin; and one brother-in-law, Robert Parish.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Gundrum Funeral Home with Deacon Juan Rodriguez officiating. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Lucerne.

Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where the rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m.
