Roscoe “Jack” Combs, 91 of Logansport, walked into the arms of his Lord and family, Friday, June 7, 2019 in Logansport, IN.
Born on April 1, 1928 in Owensboro, Kentucky, he is the son of the late Roscoe Combs Sr. and Mollie (Dennis) Combs. On August 12, 1950 in Logansport he married Mary Joan Page who preceded in death on May 6, 2014.
In 1940, Henry Ford put on a national marble championship held in Detroit, Michigan in which Jack participated and placed in the top 10 of the Nation. After the competition Mr. Ford gave Jack a shiny new dime and a ribbon for his accomplishments.
While serving in the Army Air Corp, in the occupation forces, in the Pacific theater, after many failed attempts by others, he was given the task of repairing the generator that powered the base, which he completed successfully. This was instrumental in jumpstarting Jack’s keen autodidactic gifts and career.
Jack retired from Sigman’s Allis Chalmers and also worked as a heavy equipment mechanic and auto machine shop specialist.
Jack enjoyed rebuilding Vincent Motorcycles and Mercedes Benz. He liked to watch car racing and documentaries, also catching snapping turtles and mushroom hunting. He loved his dogs, Dolly and Shaggy. Jack would always look forward to eating tomatoes from his garden.
Surviving Jack is a son, John (Lana) Combs of Logansport, IN; daughter, Joyce Combs of Logansport, IN; three granddaughters, Jennaca E. (Nick Keeler) Combs of Galveston, IN, Janell M. (Bryan) Lee of Deer Creek, IN, Jenay M. (Charles) Hoover of Logansport, IN; three grandsons, John Isaac Mason Combs of CO, Michael Dyer of Logansport, IN, Matthew (Stefanie) Dyer of Stockwell, IN; four great-granddaughters, Jenna M. (Colton) Martin of Deer Creek, IN, Sydnye Combs of Galveston, IN; Erica I. Lee of Deer Creek, IN, Shannon L. Dyer of Logansport, IN; five great-grandsons, Levi Dyer of Logansport, IN, Nicholas Dyer of Stockwell, IN, Aaron (Shannon) Hoover of PA, Zachary Hoover of VA, Jacob Hoover of Bloomington, IN; great-great-granddaughter, Brinlee Marie Martin of Deer Creek, IN.
He was preceded in death by two sons, James Owen Combs, Sam Edward Combs, two brothers and two sisters.
Jack was also preceded in death by three men whom he considered father figures and mentors to him, Uncle Wilford Crane; Ott Coleman (Courier-Newsom); and Jim Jones (Engineering Aggregates).
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at Gundrum Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will follow at Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Logansport.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until the time of service on Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to the Cass County Humane Society.
