Services for Vernie D. DeHaven, 71, Walton, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Gundrum Funeral Home.
He died at 8:10 a.m. Monday, May 18, 2009, in Logansport Memorial Hospital.
Born June 8, 1937, in Cass County, he was the son of Lloyd and Mary Zanger DeHaven. His first marriage was on Feb. 17, 1957, in Logansport, to Joyce Vance, who preceded in death June 28, 1976. His second marriage was on Jan. 14, 1977, at Blue Ball Church near Walton, to Nikki S. Shirley âHelvie,â who survives.
Vernie retired in 1999 after 39 years working out of the Operating Engineers Union Local 103. Vernie also enjoyed the time he spent farming.
Vernie was a member of the Army reserves and Blue Ball Christian Church and was an avid euchre player. Vernie was a 1955 graduate of Washington Township High School.
Survivors include his wife, Nikki DeHaven, Walton; daughter, Valeria Stafford and husband, Dana, Galveston; son, Ken DeHaven and wife, Deb, Logansport; stepsons, Rob Helvie, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Steve Helvie, Singapore; brother, Jim DeHaven and wife, Jo, Logansport; four grandchildren, Kami Meador and husband, Josh, Kassi Stafford, Kyle DeHaven and Karli DeHaven; two stepgrandchildren, Emma Helvie and Victoria Helvie; and two great-grandchildren, Garrett and Riley Meador.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bob and Ben DeHaven.
Pastor Jerry Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Cass County.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour before services Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Blue Ball Christian Church.
