Services for Walter Thomas Nies, 79, Logansport, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in All Saints Catholic Church in Logansport.
He died at 5 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, in his residence.
Born Aug. 27, 1929, in Lucerne, he was the son of Lawrence and Mable Gerlach Nies. He was married July 6, 1963, in South Bend, to Peggy Murphy, who survives.
Walter retired from KLK, ELCO, Textron after 45 years with the company.
A 1947 graduate of Royal Center High School, Walter served in the U.S. Army from March 1951 to March 1953 and was stationed in Heilbronn, Germany, for 16 months during the Korean War era. Mr. Nies was a member of All Saints Church, where he enjoyed working and volunteering in his spare time. Walter was also a member of the American Legion Post 60.
His favorite time of the year was spring, which was when he went mushroom hunting. He often times went to Minnesota with his friend, Jeff. In his earlier years, he enjoyed boating and water skiing and was an avid runner, running in the Indy Mini Marathon six times starting at the age of 65. Walter especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Also surviving are daughters, Debra Keen and husband, Ken, Niceville, Fla., and Nancy Hughes and husband, Randy, Logansport; sons, Tom Nies and wife, Kristy, Lebanon, and John Nies and wife, Jamie, Logansport; 11 grandchildren, Lyndsey, Paige and Kendra Keen, Niceville, Fla., Austin, Casey and Heidi Hughes and Bradley, Elizabeth and Jonathon Nies, all of Logansport, and Zachary and Nicholas Nies, Lebanon; brother, Gerald Nies, Royal Center; sisters-in-law, Betty Nies and Mary Ellen Nies, both of Royal Center; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Basil, George and Keith Nies, and one sister, Dorothy Renkenberger.
Father Mike McKinney will officiate. Burial, with full military graveside rites, will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday in Gundrum Funeral Home, where a Scripture service will be held at 7 p.m.
