Walter Smith Jr.

Walter J. Smith Jr., 87, of Walton, passed away Friday, August 14, 2020 in his residence.

Born on August 4, 1933 in Royal Center, IN, he is the son to the late Walter Smith Sr. and Hazel Marie (Oatess) Smith.  On June 23, 1956 in Royal Center, he married Arleen Ogborn who preceded in death on December 26, 2006.  On March 7, 2008 in Logansport, he married Donna Nadine Stillwell-Swartz who preceded in death on July 4, 2020.

Walter owned his own pole building construction company. He had also worked for Indiana Farm Bureau and Ray’s Creamery.  He was a 1951 graduate of Royal Center High School. Walter was a United States Navy Veteran serving in the Korean War.  He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 3790, American Legion Post 418 and an AE (Ammo Ship) life member.

Surviving Walter are three daughters, Cindy (Greg) Wengert of Logansport, IN, Tammy  Smith and companion Mike White of Indianapolis, IN, Jill (Don) Rowe of Logansport, IN; son, Tim (Michelle) Smith of Indianapolis, IN; step daughter, Nancy Lesley, Peru; three step sons, Scott A. Swartz, Logansport; David (Shaunita) Swartz, Walton; Darl (Anna) Swartz, Warrington, PA; four granddaughters, Casey (Joe) Fierman of Golden Bridge, NY, Kristen (Larry) Ranschaert of Granger, IN Kellyn (Braxton Johnson) Rowe of Galveston, IN, Mallory (Dylan Orbaugh) Rowe of Westfield, IN; four grandsons, Jordan  Smith of Thornton, CO, William Warren of Indianapolis, IN, Derek (Sydney) Wengert of Murfeesboro, TN, Andrew (Ashley) Rowe of Palm Coast, FL; eleven step grandchildren; two great-granddaughters, Emery Wengert, Zoey Ranschaert and a great grandson Finn Ranschaert; seven step great grandchildren; one sister, Agnes (Sonny) Small of Royal Center, IN; one step sister, Billene (Russell) Fry of Carmel, IN; one half-sister, Linda (Bill) Stillwell of Logansport, IN; one half-brother, Jerry (Linda) Smith of Winamac, IN.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, one brother, two half-brothers, three step brothers and a step mother Buna Smith.

A celebration of life will be held on at Noon on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at Gundrum Funeral Home & Crematory with Pastor Bruce Vernon officiating. Burial with Military Rites will be held at Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Logansport.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of service on Tuesday.
